At the top of a mountain made of pumice lies an alpine lake. No rivers
or springs feed it and the rain and snow is insufficient to fill it
year round. The answer lies in some not so permanent
permafrost. During the last ice age, Mauna Kea was covered with a
glacier and remnant ice remains.
