At the summit is a shrine covered with various offerings. Folklore
describes Mauna Kea as the home of the snow goddess Poli'ahu. Mauna
Loa, however, is home to Pele one of the more notorious goddesses in
the area. Apparently the two didn't enjoy cordial relations and the
saddle upon which saddle road rests is their traditional battle
ground.
