Saqqara: Colonnaded Corridor

Saqqara is the home of the step pyramid, famous for being the first tomb to have more than one level. Designed by Djoser's genius high priest/architect Imhotep, the pyramid complex contains many architectural innovations that would influence Egypt for thousands of years. At this site stone was used for the first time as a building material for tombs instead of the mud brick used in earlier structures.

Imhotep would later be deified by the new Kingdom pharaohs, the only the only non-king ever to achieve this.

The entrance to the pyramid complex is through this limestone colonnaded corridor comprising 40 columns.
