Giza: Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure
|
You can see parts of the intact limestone casing on Khafre's pyramid. Menkaure's pyramid is much smaller than the larger two, but its casing was made from red granite. Unlike white limestone which was quarried less than 10km away, granite had to come from quarries in Aswan over 900km away, with the stone blocks floated down the river. Much smaller in stature, this pyramid still required great resources to complete.
The gash you see on the side was caused by an overzealous attempt to demolish the pyramids by one of Cairo's Sultans in the 12th century. It took eight months to cause the scar, moving one or two blocks a day. Eventually the attempt was abandoned.
