Edfu Temple: Nilometer

Before the floods were controlled by the two Nile dams, water would find its way into many different places. Here through a specially dug channel, the Nile would rise. These steps were used to measure the highest level of the flood each year, in order to determine the production yields of farming. This, of course, was used to determine appropriate levels of tax collection.
