Marakesh: Djemaa El Fna

This is the largest square in Marakesh. Its size is unique in old Moroccan cities. The name can be interpreted in a few different ways. The word "Djemaa" means both "mosque" and "assembly". "Fna" means "dead" or "nothing". This could refer to its past as a place of execution but also to a failed Saadian attempt to build a mosque here. "Assembly of the Dead" or "Mosque of Nothing".
