Casablanca: Hassan II Mosque

The Mosque is the second largest in the world (the largest being in Mecca) but boasts the tallest minaret at 210m. Inspired from a quote form the Koran which states that God's thrown was built on the water, part of it is built over the Atlantic ocean. It was incredibly expensive and at the time represented a huge drain the Moroccan economy.

To be honest my first reaction was negative. The building itself is impressive but there's a certain lifelessness and antiseptic feel about it. It seems too rich to match the surrounding city.
