Meknes: Heri es Souani

This is Bab en Naoura a somewhat less impressive structure. Behind the gate are Eucalyptus trees. Introduced by the French, these Australian natives dominate the country and have now been adopted into local culture as fuel for Hammams, the public baths so integral to Islamic life. Traditionally the aromatic Olive wood was burned to heat bath water but nowadays in Morocco Eucalyptus is also used and is also valued for its fragrance.
