Meknes: Heri es Souani

These high-ceilinged rooms are part of Heri es Souani the granaries of Moulay Ismail. Built in secret by captured Christian slaves, these storage houses were designed to supply the city with food in time of conflict or drought. Ismail was constantly warring with Berber tribes and eventually conquered an area that reached from Modern day Algeria to Mauritania.
