Driving through rolling hills, not too far from Fes are the ruins of
the Roman town of
Volubilis.
Except for a small trading port on the Island of Essouira (also in
present day Morocco), this was the most remote of Roman
cities. Situated in some of the best fertile land of North Africa it
provided wheat, olives and large quantities of wild animals (mostly for
games) for the Roman Empire.
This site was also used for the filming of
Martin Scorcese's
The Last Temptation of Christ.
