Fes el Bali: Carpets

What trip to Morocco would be complete without some examination of local carpets and rugs? After being offered a glass of mint tea, we were again treated to a detailed explanation of their quality mechandise, told why their carpets are better than their competitors and convinced how hand made carpets are superiour to their machine made counterparts. We learnt about four (or was it five) different kinds of carpets native to Morocco and how they might boast as many as 300,000 knots per square metre. I personally liked the restrained designs the Berber rugs the best.

Inevitably, the aggressive salesman took over and it was on for young and old. More than the other sales people we'd seen that day, these guys were incredibly tenacious. However, I think they'd made a mistake in their hard sell strategy with our crowd since even though many were tempted, I don't think a single carpet was sold to anyone of us. Our hosts looked more than a little annoyed when we left.
