I was now enterring
Awaji-shima 淡路島,
the island that would be the bridge to
Shikoku 四国, my ultimate destination.
Shikoku is the smallest of Japan's Four major islands. Separated from
Honshu 本州 in older times by treacherous
straits and in modern times by high bridge tolls, it has remained culturally distinct
from the other islands of Japan.
