As you can see by the designs in their clothing, the Ainu designs are
very different from that we associate with the Japanese. The men here
wear a ceremonial headdress made from wheat. Watching them dance was
somewhat sad since it seems the Ainu culture is slowly dying. There has
been so much intermarriage that it's estimated that there are only 200
full blood Ainu left. Furthermore without a written language many of the
old yukar or epic poems are being lost.
