My first test of my language comprehension came when renting my car. People had warning me that driving in Japan is difficult due to its narrow streets and crazy drivers. I'd lived in Brooklyn for 2 years so I felt I could ignore this advice. Still, reading maps in another language is challenging, especially when you don't share its alphabet.
