The Citadel: Mohammed Ali Mosque

Built in an Ottoman style between 1830 and 1848 it copies quite closely the Yeni Mosque in Istanbul. The twin tower design was, at that time, reserved for Mosques built under the supervision of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, so this Mosque represents a declaration of the independence and power of Egypt at that time.
