Casa Rinconada: Building Information

This is the largest of the Great Kivas in Chaco. Its axis like most of the Kivas in the Canyon is aligned to the north. It's accurate to within 1 degree.

One intersesting feature of this building can be seen during the Summer Solstice. Light shining through one of the openings illuminates another window on the opposite side of the kiva. When completed this structure would not have shown this alignment since it was covered. Furthermore it's unknown if an exterior wall would have covered the opening or not.

"Rincon" means box canyon and "Casa" house.
